Our Family’s German Heritage
This book follows the family history of two German families: The Gross family from the Thuringia region, and the Hubach family from the Rhineland-Palatinate and Bavaria regions of Germany. It takes each family from the 16th century to the present, and examines the history of each area, their towns of origin, the lifestyle that they lived, the local cuisine, family life in Germany in these early centuries, and many other aspects of life in Germany in that Epoch. It also follows the families as they emigrate to America, in New York City, and their struggles to integrate into a new society. It briefly looks at German history, genealogical sources, the German language, and emigration from Germany. It goes into great depth of the family of General Charles Philip Gross and his descendants.
Who knows if our early ancestors in the 16th and 17th centuries could even imagine how their future families would turn out? All of us scattered throughout the world owe them for the struggles they went through, the sacrifices they made to raise good families and teach them values that have lasted through the centuries.
We thank our ancestors who dared to cross the seas and bring their German culture and heritage to America and raise their families here. This book is to honor and remember them, to allow us to respect and be thankful for their struggles, and to be proud of the German heritage that they gave us.
This book is also a reminder to all of us that family ties and traditions are important and that we are all linked together by our common heritage.
